Three Attempts at Goyification

A Jew living in Berlin decides she’s had enough. She documents her three attempts to leave the Jewish people and become a goy. All it will take are a petition, a blood exchange and the holy (Christian) bible.

In modern times, there is no easy way to become a goy (non-Jew), since there is no single defnition of what it means to be Jewish. An approach to “Goyifcation” in 2023 must therefore address the ambiguity of Jewishness: Jewishness as an internalized imposition from the outside; Jewishness as something essential within the blood; Jewishness as a religion.

In her three attempts at becoming a goy, the protagonist, Michaela, experiences a series of humorous and honest encounters with Goyim and Jews alike that raise existential questions: who owns and defnes Jewishness — is it the Germans, is it the Jews? How does Jewishness exist in relation to German-ness and other minority identities in Germany? What does it mean to leave and how far will she go to achieve this? And lastly, could this attempt at “Goyifcation” ironically make her more Jewish than she could ever want to be? (Production Note)
