When the snow begins to melt
As usual, senior electrician Lehner takes care of the cable clutter, alpine safety equipment, and the Lesbian Cruiser disguised as a snowcat, when suddenly crevasse researcher Schmitz enters the scene. Then all at once, there's a crackle in the lines, flashes of lightning appear, and a battle must be fought to determine who is stronger. Power relations are put to the test, heat is felt everywhere, even though Schmitz is conducting research on how to stop the snow from melting.
In their spectacular outfits, Lehner and Schmitz make not only fashion statements but also political ones. Here, characters wander into and out of their roles. The means by which the film is made become visible, and documentary mixes with fiction. A portrait of romantic solidarity in a melting world. Queer realities are inscribed in landscapes and mountain panoramas that the right wing and Nazis have claimed for themselves for many years. An unusual love story, told in a manner that is as funny as it is subversive, camp aesthetics meet Alpine romance and attempt to counteract the general shift to the right.
With subtle irony and visual exuberance, the film subverts conservative mountain society—and shows how love, humor, and resilience can find a place even where tradition and dogma rule. (Production Note)
